Stuttering is as old as recorded history. According to the Bible, Moses stuttered. Isaac Newton stuttered…..as did Winston Churchill and Marilyn Monroe. And for as long as people have stuttered, the debate has raged as to the cause: physiological or psychological.
The truth is, the cause of stuttering can be either physiological or psychological…or both.
Here is our opinion: If a person who stutters (PWS) does so ALL the time, the reason MAY be physical in nature or may have both physical and psychological elements. However, if a PWS stutters only SOME of the time, or the degree of speech fluency varies from time to time or from situation to situation, then the reason may very well be wholly or mostly psychological.
Over the years, the Louisville Hypnosis Academy has offered hypnotherapy for many individuals who stutter… with generally favorable results. That means that adequate hypnosis intervention provided a significant improvement in speech fluency for many individuals.
So, how does hypnotherapy provide relief and improvement for those with speech fluency challenges?
If a PWS stutters only in certain settings or the degree of stuttering changes situationally, then it may well be the case that stress, anxiety, and/or fear pay a crucial role. Often, stuttering begins with a physical problem at a young age; however, when that physical problem is resolved naturally or through treatment, anxiety and fear remain, so compromised fluency continues even though the physical element no longer exists. So, if those individuals can learn to simply relax and let go of the anxiety and fear, then fluency improves.
According to the American Psychological Association (APA), hypnosis involves learning how to use your mind and thoughts in order to manage emotional distress (e.g., anxiety, stress), unpleasant physical symptoms..…, or to help you change certain habits or behaviors..…Moreover, hypnotherapy has been used for centuries as a means of removing unwanted fears and phobias. The goal then in using hypnosis for stuttering is to induce relaxation, lessen or negate anxiety, and subordinate conscious or unconscious fears.
While each case is different, we have found that recognizable improvement in fluency can often be achieved in as few as five sessions of hypnotherapy (although the number of session vary and additional sessions might be necessary to effect permanent results).
In general, hypnosis to promote greater speech fluency is appropriate for PWS who are 8 years old and older. Some (but not all) children as young as five years old might also benefit from hypnosis. A Certified Hypnotherapist at the Louisville Hypnosis Academy will be happy to provide a no-charge consultation for anyone who has a speech fluency issue. Such a consultation will yield valuable information to help the hypnotherapist and the PWS determine if hypnosis intervention could be beneficial.
