Humans have been making (and breaking) New Year’s Resolutions for a very long time.
The tradition of celebrating a “new year” started with the Babylonians who actually observed it at the beginning of what is the modern day month of March. Actually, that month probably makes more sense with the new beginning that springtime symbolizes. There are some indications that Babylonians also made promises to the gods at that time of year, which likely were the forerunners of our New Year’s Resolutions.
By pre-Christian Roman times, the new year was being celebrated seasonally earlier and honored the two-headed god Janus (appropriate for the beginning of a new year with one head looking back and one looking forward). Romans also made promises to Janus and to themselves to live better lives and all sorts of other pledges.
In early Christian times, the tradition of New Year’s Resolutions took a serious turn with a heavy emphasis on self-reflection and sacrifice. Not wanting to associate themselves with paganism, Christians changed the name of the month from Janus to January, which brings us to the New Year’s celebration of today.
Aside from the holiday itself, the parades and football games, New Year’s is probably best known for a time of making resolutions. These are usually associated with some type of self-improvement such as weight loss, getting rid of a bad habit or behavior, saving money, or spending more quality time with the family.
In 1940, about 25% of Americans made New Year’s Resolutions. That number has slowly and steadily grown over the years with about 40% of our fellow citizens making at least one New Year’s Resolution today. But…without outside help and intervention, most resolutions are doomed to failure. Experts in the field (yes, there are experts in New Year’s Resolutions) tell us that when individuals “go it alone,” only about 12% succeed in keeping their promise for a full year. With outside assistance, the success rate is substantially higher.
